DESCRIPTION:In the American context\, most comparative theologians develop
 ed their field of research out of the encounter of Christianity and the Ea
 stern religions. In centers of comparative theology in Europe\, for exampl
 e in Edinburgh\, Leuven\, Paderborn & Bonn\, the focus shifted to the enco
 unters of Judaism\, Christianity & Islam. This leads to different challeng
 es because of the special relationships between these three religions. Jud
 aism & Christianity seem to have developed themselves in the first centuri
 es of the common era in a kind of twin birth which ties them much closer t
 ogether than we thought in the past. Furthermore\, Jesus & Paul have incre
 asingly been understood within the Judaism of their times rather than only
  focusing on differences. Many Christian theologians developed Israel theo
 logies to respond to this close relationship and to appreciate the importa
 nce of Judaism for Christianity. Some Jewish theologians responded constru
