Lecture by Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ay (Ankara University)

Within the realm of Muslim Theology, there exist various perspectives and discussions regarding the rationality of revealed propositions. Ahl al-Hadith adheres to the first approach, giving precedence to the authority of Nass/Sacred Text over reason. According to this paradigm, revelation is not within the domain of reason, but rather within the domain of faith. According to Ash'ari theology and certain Sunni groups, the rational significance and purpose of revelation are determined by the boundaries set by revelation itself. In the context of Islamic Philosophy, Mu'tazila and Maturidi theology assert that the statements revealed by God are entirely consistent with the human ability to use reason and engage in contemplation. Thus, the divine assistance of revelation/kalamullah enhances the innate, intellectual, and creative capacity of humanity.
