Beyond Binaries: An Attempt for Queer Islamic Theology (QIT)
Abdul Basit Zafar and Zahra (Sepid) Birashk have successfully obtained funding for their novel project “Beyond Binaries: An Attempt for Queer Islamic Theology” through the Volkswagen Foundation’s “Open Up” program. Their project pioneers the integration of queer theory within Islamic theology, addressing a critical gap in existing research and fostering interdisciplinary approaches.
The initiative aims to explore the theological dimensions of gender and identity by integrating insights from queer Christian theology and Muslim feminist readings of scripture. It seeks to develop theologically robust and culturally appropriate ways by recognizing the differences between Islamic and Christian theological traditions. Although reconciling queer theory with Islamic theology is intricate, their efforts are poised to introduce innovative viewpoints to the discipline and stimulate significant discourse in both academic and community contexts.
