Syriac Exegesis in Late Antiquity (SELA)

The aim of this project is to record, index, and make freely accessible Syriac exegetical literature.

The commentaries, homilies, and exegetical treatises on the Old and New Testaments written in the Syriac language constitute an exegetical corpus that, in terms of scope, diversity, theological and cultural-historical significance,  is on a par with the much better-known biblical exegetical literature of Greek- and Latin-speaking Christianity.

Nevertheless, this corpus remains largely unexplored, untranslated, or even unedited. Thus, the flourishing research on  Syriac exegetical literature is based on only a small fraction of the exegetical corpus. By examining and making the Syriac exegetical  corpus accessible, this project aims to make a significant contribution to the preservation, reappraisal, and visibility of Syriac literature as world cultural heritage.
